Handmade by students, parents and teachers at Anahuacalmecac, our cold porcelain flowers and arrangements were inspired by our elder-in-residence Mrs. Alida Oceguera. Mrs. Oceguera is a master artist and grandmother in our school community as well. Originally from Oaxaca, Mrs. Oceguera leads culturally-based creative entrepreneurial classes in arts and design after school with our students. Promoted by Anahuacalmecac Director of Education, Minnie Ferguson, Mrs. Oceguera, guided our volunteers to learn how to design, mold and paint these one-of-a-kind creations entirely by hand. Dozens of parents, staff and students have generously donated their time and expertise to create these one-of-a-kind flowers and arrangements.
Cold porcelain's main components are cornstarch and white glue, but can also include small amounts of oils and glycerol, which promote a porcelain-like, smooth texture. Our cold porcelain is biodegradable and is created with a secret recipe Ms. Oceguera makes herself.
Once sculpted into a finished craft, cold porcelain does not require heat to cure, instead hardening by exposure to air.
